Loss of relationship claim awarded to parents after son killed in car accident
Our clients' 27 year-old son was riding as a passenger in a friend's car. He was killed when the driver lost control of the car and went off the road. The victim was a single young man who lived with his parents at the time of the accident. He left behind no wife or children dependant on his income. However, Attorney Paul Schweiger argued that the victim's next-of-kin were entitled to compensatory damages for "loss of relationship"--a claim that is historically very difficult to receive compensation for.
After hearing the facts and testimony of the case, the jury determined that the loss of an adult child was significant enough to warrant an Award of $731,000.
