Safety Tips To Avoid Car Accidents In Snow
Winter Storm Kayla hits Minnesota Causing over 287 Car Crashes
Safety Tips for Driving in the Snow Safely
Minnesota is digging out this morning from winter storm Kayla, which brought over a foot of snow to many in Minnesota and caused over 287 car accidents. The Minnesota State Patrol reported 679 crashes or spin-outs in the snowy conditions yesterday between 6:00am and 8:30pm.Even experienced drivers can find their nerves and skills tested by poor winter road conditions. Here are some tips to help you drive safely in the snow and avoid car accidents:
- During a snow storm, don't drive if you don't have to.
- "Don't Crowd the Plow." Never pass a snow plow or plow train (a series of plows working in tandem). If driving behind a snow plow or salt truck, provide plenty of space (at least 7-8 car lengths) behind the truck.
- Bridges, ramps and overpasses freeze first so remember to use caution when driving across them.
- Four-wheel drive vehicles are just as vulnerable to slipping on ice as two-wheel drive vehicles.
- Pack a winter driving survival kit including a blanket, water, jumper cables, shovel, flares, snacks and a flash light.
- Clear snow from your vehicle; from your headlights, taillights, and from other places that may obstruct your vision or become a danger to other motorists.
- Make sure your vehicle is in proper working condition. Check the battery, tire pressure, belts, hoses and fluid levels. Always travel with plenty of gas in the tank.
Please drive safe and enjoy our winter!
