Icy Conditions
Many Minnesotans suffer serious injury from sudden falls caused by icy sidewalks and driveways.
Many of these injuries could have been easily prevented. It is your duty to salt and sand icy conditions and walking paths. Minnesota law allows a reasonable time period after a snow storm to salt and sand. If you own your own property and are expecting customers or guests, you should take steps to make sure your walkways are clear of ice. Generally, a failed attempt to remove snow and ice can create an artificial condition subjecting the one who created the condition to liability, as seen in Kragel v. Walmart Stores, Inc. 537 N.W.2d 699, 707 (Iowa1995).
Many of these serious often orthopedic injuries can be prevented through more diligent monitoring of walkways. Please walk carefully and if you are a home or business owner, remember to salt and sand after snow storms.
