Meet George
George Berens brings a wealth of experience and a passion for advocacy to his practice at SiebenCarey, where he focuses on workers’ compensation, Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA), and Minnesota State Retirement System (MSRS) benefits claims and personal injury law.
George joined the firm in 2024. Having practiced in various areas of the law since 2009, George brings a broad perspective developed by representing plaintiffs and defendants in various legal actions. He represented employers and insurers for several years, defending workers’ compensation claims while practicing law with two of Minnesota’s most prominent workers’ compensation defense firms, before changing to the plaintiff’s/petitioner’s side in 2022.
George’s unique background advocating for clients on both sides of injury claims gives him invaluable insight into the strategies and practices used by employers and insurers in their approach to claims, whether accepted or denied. This perspective allows him to navigate complex cases and effectively represent his clients toward successful outcomes.
George received his Bachelor’s degree in history from Ripon College in 2003. He graduated from Mitchell Hamline College of Law in 2009 and has been a member of the Minnesota State Bar Association and the Hennepin County Bar Association since December 2009.
History of Service
Before becoming an attorney, George served in the United States Peace Corps in Paraguay, South America, where he developed a deep commitment to supporting underserved communities. While in law school, he continued public service by volunteering with the Minnesota Justice Foundation, providing pro bono legal services as a student certified to practice law in Minnesota, representing individuals in association with misdemeanor criminal charges, and participating in foreign legal training in Chile, South America through the Santiago Public Defender’s Office. George is fluent in Spanish.
Over the years, George has built a reputation for his ability to demystify the legal process for his clients. He takes the time to explain why insurers and defense counsel act as they do and how the legal system works. He thoughtfully discusses clients’ options at each stage of a claim, empowering clients to make informed decisions. Whether advocating for first responders seeking duty disability benefits or other workers facing temporary or permanent injuries, George’s goal is to provide compassionate, results-driven representation.
Based primarily in Duluth, George serves clients throughout Minnesota, working closely with attorneys in the firm’s Minneapolis office to ensure comprehensive legal support statewide. He has extensive experience representing union members, including law enforcement and firefighters, and is actively strengthening his ties to union communities.
Outside of the office, George is a lifelong Minnesotan who loves spending time outdoors. Whether hunting, fishing, or exploring northern Minnesota, George enjoys spending time with his wife, Michelle, and their dog, Ernie.
I have built a foundation for helping the underserved. People need someone in their corner, especially when injuries happen. I am here to listen and pursue the benefits injured people deserve and need.
